hi chad,
here's a list of some of phoenix's main features:

Client:

-ActionScript 3.0 support
-radically overhauled, simplified client api
-access to information about a room you're not in

Server:

-nio support (solves thread-limit issue)
-hibernate support (lets you use any database for persistence)
-new module architecture replaces custom rooms
-http tunneling
-anti-flooding

there are also tons of minor features in the api that we'll list later.

note that binary sockets and encryption are not part of phoenix.
