new sites are at the bottom of each category. moockmarks are also as a single netscape bookmarks file. (note: right now i'm leaving in dead links for historical purposes. one day i might overhaul everything and add an option to not view dead links.)
- general internet reference
connecting online - the authors' bookmarks
whatis.com
- a good source of definitions and explanations for laypeople about internet and computer terms and concepts.
wdvl: the illustrated encyclopedia of web technology
- a very comprehensive collection of information about building websites. many concepts clearly explained and many tutorials on how to makes sites using the technologies described.
the world wide web encyclopedia
- a fairly old (1996), but good dictionary of terms used in web technology.
webopaedia
- like whatis.com, this is internet.com's dictionary of terms used in programming, the web, and computers in general. professionally written, and thorough coverage of most topics.
the free online dictionary of computing
- started in 1993 by editor denis howe, this massive repository of programming and computing terms is one of the dinosaurs of the web. mirrored the world over, and used by ask jeeves and dictionary.com, it contains excellent information, and exhaustive coverage of topics. the implied audience is programmers, not beginners or non-programmers. the dictionary is updated regularly and has many contributors. at my last count (may 8, 2000) the dictionary had definitions for 13057 terms. (this is also a classic in old school html design--p, h, ul, dl, and hr are pretty much the only tags used. though i did spot one graphic ;)
google groups
- search archives of usenet dating back to 1981.
wikipedia
- a community maintained encyclopedia with good coverage of computing and programming.
